A growing share of shoppers no longer start with a search box. They ask an assistant: “What’s the best unheated sapphire under $2,000?” or “Which dog harness won’t rub under the legs?” The assistant reads the web, compares products and names a few. If your store isn’t in that short list, you’re invisible at the exact moment someone is ready to buy.
That practice — making your store easy for AI systems to read, trust and cite — is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). The good news: most of it is solid ecommerce housekeeping, and Shopify already does a lot of the heavy lifting.
How AI assistants choose products
No assistant publishes its ranking formula, but the pattern is consistent. They favour products whose facts are complete, consistent and easy to verify:
- Clear, specific product data — materials, dimensions, compatibility, sizes, origin, ingredients.
- Accurate price and availability — an assistant will skip a product it believes is sold out.
- Evidence of trust — real reviews, clear returns and shipping policies, a real business behind the store.
- Content that answers the question — buying guides, comparisons and FAQs written the way people actually ask.
Step 1: Make every product page answer “is this right for me?”
Look at your best-selling product and list the five questions customers ask before buying. Then make sure the page answers each one in plain text — not hidden in an image or a video only.
- Use the product title for what it is (“Ceylon Blue Sapphire, 1.21 ct, Unheated”), not just a brand name.
- Put key facts in a scannable list: size, material, care, compatibility.
- Use Shopify metafields for structured attributes (origin, treatment, skin type, breed size) so they show consistently across products.
- Add a short FAQ on products that generate repeat questions.
Step 2: Get your structured data right
Structured data (schema.org markup) is the machine-readable version of your product page. Modern Shopify themes output Product and Offer data automatically, but apps and old customizations often add duplicates or conflicting values. Check that:
- Each product has one Product block with name, image, description, brand and SKU/GTIN where you have them.
- Offers show the correct price, currency and availability.
- Review data only appears when it comes from real reviews.
We cover this in detail in our structured data checklist.
Step 3: Fix “sold out” confusion
One of the most common problems we see: a product is in stock, but an AI browsing tool reports it as sold out. The cause is usually a conflicting signal — a hidden “Sold out” label in the theme, a variant that defaults to an unavailable option, or an app injecting its own markup. Test your top products by asking assistants about them, and fix the source rather than the symptom.
Step 4: Publish answer-first content
Assistants love pages that answer a question directly and then back it up. For each main collection, write one helpful guide:
- “How to choose a [product]” with a short answer in the first paragraph.
- Comparisons between your own product types (“heated vs unheated sapphire”).
- Sizing and fit guides with real measurements.
Link each guide to the relevant collection and products so both readers and crawlers can follow the path.
Step 5: Use Shopify’s AI channels
Shopify now makes eligible products discoverable in AI shopping channels through its Agentic Storefronts and the Shopify Catalog. Since March 2026, shoppers who find your products in ChatGPT complete their purchase on your own store, and those orders appear in your admin like any other channel. Check your sales channel settings in the Shopify admin to see which channels are on and whether any products are excluded. Read more in our guide to agentic commerce.
Step 6: Measure it
- Once a month, ask the main assistants the questions your customers ask and note whether you appear.
- In GA4 and Shopify Analytics, watch referral traffic from AI assistants (ChatGPT links often carry a
utm_source=chatgpt.comtag). - Track which products get mentioned and improve the ones that don’t.
Quick GEO checklist
- Product titles describe the product clearly
- Key attributes in text and metafields
- One clean Product schema per product, correct availability
- Real reviews, clear shipping and returns policies
- One answer-first guide per main collection
- AI sales channels checked in your admin
- Monthly visibility check
Example: rewriting one product for AI
Before: “Luxe Blue Stone — a stunning gem for the discerning collector.”
After: “Ceylon Blue Sapphire, 1.21 ct, cushion cut. Unheated, Sri Lankan origin, GRS certificate included. 6.4 × 5.8 × 3.9 mm. Ships insured worldwide in 2–4 days.”
The second version answers every question an assistant would need to recommend it for “unheated blue sapphire under $2,000” — and it reads better for humans too.
FAQ
Is GEO different from SEO?
They overlap. SEO helps your pages rank in search results; GEO focuses on making your products easy for AI systems to understand, compare and cite. Good SEO is the foundation for both.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Organic AI answers aren’t sold as ad placements. The way in is accurate data, trustworthy content and taking part in the AI channels Shopify supports.
How long does it take to see results?
Data and schema fixes can be picked up within weeks. Content-led visibility usually builds over a few months, similar to SEO.
