Product Data That AI and Google Can Trust: A Shopify Structured Data Checklist

Structured data is a small block of code — usually JSON-LD — that describes your page in a format machines understand: “this is a product, it costs $34, it’s in stock, it has 128 reviews.” Google uses it for rich results like price and rating in search. AI assistants use the same signals to understand and compare products.

What Shopify does for you

Modern Shopify themes (including Dawn and Horizon) output product structured data automatically using Shopify’s structured_data Liquid filter. Problems usually come from three places: older custom code, review or SEO apps that add a second copy, and missing product information.

The checklist

1. Product

  • Exactly one Product (or ProductGroup for variants) per product page.
  • Name, description, image and URL match what the shopper sees.
  • Brand filled in (use Shopify’s Vendor field).
  • SKU and GTIN/barcode where you have them.

2. Offer

  • Price and currency match the page — including sale prices.
  • Availability is correct for every variant. This is the signal AI tools use to decide whether you can be recommended.
  • Shipping and returns details are clear on the page and in your store policies.

3. Reviews

  • Only mark up real reviews from customers.
  • Use one review app’s markup — not your theme’s and the app’s.

4. Organization and website

  • Organization data with your store name, logo and contact details (often on the home page).
  • Consistent business name and details everywhere you appear online.

5. Breadcrumbs and articles

  • BreadcrumbList on product and collection pages helps search engines understand your structure.
  • Article markup on blog posts with author and date.

6. FAQs

Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative sites, so don’t expect stars or dropdowns in search. FAQ content and markup is still useful: it gives AI assistants clear, quotable answers.

How to test

  1. Paste a product URL into Google’s Rich Results Test.
  2. Check for duplicate Product blocks and missing fields.
  3. Review Google Search Console’s Merchant listings and Product snippets reports.
  4. If you use Google Merchant Center, check its diagnostics for price and availability mismatches.

Common mistakes we fix

  • Two or three Product blocks from different apps.
  • Prices that ignore the selected variant or market currency.
  • “OutOfStock” on in-stock products because of a theme bug.
  • Review stars marked up without any reviews.

What a clean product block includes

Field Where it comes from in Shopify
name Product title
description Product description
image Product media
brand Vendor
sku / gtin Variant SKU and barcode
offers.price Variant price
offers.availability Inventory and “continue selling” settings

If a field is empty in Shopify, it can’t appear in your structured data. Filling in vendor, SKU and barcode is often the quickest improvement.

FAQ

Do I need an SEO app for schema?

Usually not. Modern themes output the essentials. Apps can help with extras, but make sure they don’t duplicate what your theme already outputs.

Will structured data improve my rankings?

It doesn’t guarantee higher rankings, but it makes your pages eligible for rich results and easier for search engines and AI assistants to understand.

How often should I check it?

After every theme change, app install or migration — and once a quarter otherwise.
